Water
Water Use by Sector
Tables
Since permit holders regularly do not use their full water allocation in a year, it is useful to measure both total water allocations allowed by permits, as well as actual water used. Unfortunately, calculating actual water use is difficult, and there exist few estimates for Alberta as a whole (the exception to this rule is irrigation within irrigation districts, as shown in the irrigation table). In order to give readers a better picture of actual water use, some studies have been listed in the references at the bottom for further information. More comprehensive data exists for water allocations, categorised both by sector and by major basin.

| Municipal: | Taken from the Municipal Water Use table. This is only an estimate, and should be used with caution. |
| Livestock: | Taken from the Agricultural Water Use table. Equal to the sum of livestock watering and livestock farm water use. For estimates of water intensities for livestock, please visit Alberta Environment's website at: http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/wwg407?opendocument |
| Crop Use: | Taken from the Agricultural Water Use table. Equal to the sum of irrigation, spraying, washing, and greenhouse water use. |
| Commercial: | Aggregate time-series data on actual commercial water use is not available at this time. For information on water allocations, please see the water allocations table. |
| Oil and Gas: | Aggregate time-series data on actual oil&gas water use is not available at this time. For information on water allocations, please see the water allocations table. For information on water intensity estimates for certain types of oil & gas production, please see the following sites: --> http://www.capp.ca/library/publications/environmentStewardship/pages/pubInfo.aspx?DocId=154986#IZSliV40EmAm |
| Thermal Power Generation: | Aggregate time-series data on actual oil&gas water use is not available at this time. While thermal power generation is the biggest user of water in Canada, its role in Alberta is much smaller (Agriculture is the biggest user of water in Alberta).
