ALCES Timber Supply Validation: Comparison of ALCES
and Woodstock/Stanley
The Forestry Corp was retained by Alberta Environment and the AFPA to undertake a comparison of the forest modeling tools ALCES and Woodstock. Specifically, the analysis was to investigate each tool’s timber supply results and to examine the forecasted landscapes in order to determine how the tools handle strata and transitions over time. A matrix of timber supply runs was prepared for a common dataset that addressed the issues raised by the project team – model accounting, fire and landbase losses, required TSA parameters, and forest scaling. Results from both tools were compared with respect to AAC, harvest sequence and future age class distributions.

An Evaluation of ALCES, A Landscape Cumulative Effects
Simulator for use in Integrated Resource Management in
Alberta
ALCES (A landscape cumulative effects simulator) has been selected as one of several tools to support the development of regional resource and environmental strategies. This report defines the role of ALCES in the regional planning process, evaluates its utility for that purpose, and provides guidelines for its productive use. It defines the scope and recommends a development path.
