Regional Planning For Alberta |
Alberta is busier than ever. The past 100 years have seen incredible exponential growth and it's only going to get busier. The economy is strong and healthy, opportunities abound, and the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well. But with this growth comes the challenge of managing the building of our future with a sustainable and well planned vision that will ensure the continued prosperity of our province, not only for ourselves, but for our children and grandchildren. This presentation opens an important conversation about economic, social, and ecological integrity of the province we call home - Alberta. |

Ghost Watershed Cumulative Effects Study - Phase 2 |
A presentation of the findings from Phase 2 of the Ghost River Watershed Cumulative Effects Study prepared for the Ghost Watershed Alliance Society and completed in 2012 by the Alces Group. It shows a summary of the Business As Usual Land Use Trajectory and compares it with Beneficial Management Practices. This video contrasts the performance of key indiccators in a scenario that deploys beneficial management practices in comparison to business as usual scenario. This presentation underscores the importance of beneficial management practices but also reveals that BMPs themselves are unlikely to create a landscape where indicator performance is acceptable. BMPs will need to be deployed within a management framework where management objectives, thresholds, trade-offs are defined. |

Ft. McKay First Nation Cumulative Effects Presentation 2013 - Full Version (1:37:18) |
This is a narrated presentation by Dr. Brad Stelfox detailing the results of a cumulative effects study completed for the Ft. McKay First Nation in 2013 by ALCES.Fort McKay is a Cree, Dene and Métis community, located in the centre of the Athabasca Oil Sands area in northeastern Alberta. Much of Fort McKay’s traditional lands have been leased for oil sands developments and many projects have been developed or planned, which has significant adverse impacts on Fort McKay’s Aboriginal and Treaty rights and cultural heritage. Of particular concern are projects that impact the Moose Lake area. The Moose Lake area is considered a peaceful and spiritual place where members of Fort McKay can get away from the development surrounding the hamlet of Fort McKay and practice their traditional land use activities (hunting, trapping, fishing, harvesting of traditional foods and medicines). It is also a place where community members feel that ecosystems are still healthy, the air and water are still clean, and that the traditional foods and medicines are safe to consume. |
